What happens when subcultures go mainstream?

In Episode two of com.unity by MODECANADAROCKS, we explore the journey from underground movements to cultural dominance—and the complexities that come with it. As aesthetics, ideas, and identities move into the spotlight, what gets amplified… and what gets erased?

This conversation traces a quiet but persistent through-line in Canada’s fashion story: extraction. Cultural, creative, and material. Who benefits when subcultures are “discovered”? And how do we begin to recognize—and rethink—these patterns?

Hosted by Hillary LeBlanc, this episode brings together three multidisciplinary voices working at the intersection of fashion, art, and social impact:

Benjamin Von Wong
A multidisciplinary visual artist and activist known for transforming recycled materials into striking large-scale installations. His work bridges climate action and social justice, often mobilizing communities to participate in the creative process.

Celia Sears
Founder of SHOW DIVISION, a backstage beauty agency redefining industry standards since 2015. Celia has worked with leading names in fashion while championing true inclusivity across all hair types and skin tones. Through her Inclusive Salon initiative, she continues to push the industry forward.

Refaya Turshin
A Canadian-Bangladeshi artist, designer, and photographer whose practice blends fashion, fine art, and image-making. Working with sustainable materials and experimental techniques, she explores movement, structure, and a more intentional future for fashion.
