LU KALA – Pretty Girl Era | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2024

“I don’t feel the pressure to change myself. I’m here because I am myself.” That kind of self-realization lies at the core of Lu Kala’s ethos; it was there from the very beginning with her first release, “DCMO (Don’t Count Me Out).” Over glossy snaps, claps, and trap hats, she delivered her first sermon about body positivity. “I know I’m big girl/And you are afraid to claim me… I’ll never be that picture baby/But I lie when I say that I don’t care what you think.” It’s that last line that really makes the difference, because it’s important to acknowledge that self-doubt and self-confidence aren’t mutually exclusive. Life ain’t always sunshine and roses. Lu simply wants to lead listeners towards more moments of inner peace. “Inspiring people keeps me motivated,” the Rihanna fan told us. “I just feel like I didn’t see a lot of Black pop stars growing up.” Thanks to the Lizzos and The Weeknds of the world, representation has improved in the past decade or two. But Lu’s ready to take it a step further. She talks dental insecurities on “Love Shit.” On her new single “Hotter Now,” she claims that what doesn’t kill you makes you, in fact, hotter. Basically, if you need a cheerleader in your life, this former songwriter for Jennifer Hudson awaits you with pom poms in hand. You just gotta press play. The funked out “Pretty Girl Era” has been a staple on pop playlists since it arrived last winter. Listen to it when you’re in front of the vanity. Lu promises it’ll help make you feel like the “baddest bitch” when you go out. By the way, if you like the groove of that one, you’ll love her “Lottery” collab with Latto - which shot into the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100. These performances of “PGE” and “Hotter Now” are prime examples of what it looks like when a pop artist is totally in their bag.
